My first post will be about how I made this site. It wasn’t easy but it wasn’t that hard. This will be pretty technical, so if you don’t have any technical knowledge, expect to not understand a lot of this. This is using my own web server, which is nice to have knowing that I wont be spending a lot of money for somebody to host my website for me, when this blog won’t get more than two views at a time in a day. I think my dads website, aztech-inc.com spends more than $100 a month to keep it up, so I will probably offer this to him. What do I use for my web server?
I use a raspberry pi. Unfortunately now they cost a lot more than they used to at around $30, now they are roughly $70. Lucky for me I bought it when it was at the former. The device is meant for many things, mostly learning how computers and operating systems work, but since it is so small, connects to Ethernet, and draws small amounts of power, it can be used as a web server if you know how to do it. I use mine now for a couple of things. One is powering this website, and the other is something called PiHole. It blocks ads across your entire network and doesn’t take much setup or technical knowledge to use.
Regarding this website, I used GPT 4 to help guide me through the process and I learned a lot. I used MariaDB and Apache to get it started. MariaDB is where the website is stored, and Apache is the program that runs the web server on the Pi. It took me a few hours of troubleshooting, but in the end, I am paying $16 for the domain every year, and nothing for the web server or anything else.
Hell yeah.
